The Shipping of Duport Steel Plant
The largest single cargo ever to be handled by Escombe at Swansea was the shipment of an entire steel mill to Southern Africa in the 1980s. The Duport Steel Mill in Llanelli was stripped down, labelled and shipped out of Swansea Docks aboard the m.v. ‘Project Orient’. Peter Harris was on the Duport site for the whole of the dismantling process, recording the dimension and weight of every single constituent part of the steel plant prior to shipment, and has kindly provided us with the following photos:-
